The Pledges of Aqabah (Bay'at al-Aqabah)
بَيْعَةُ العَقَبَةِ الأُولَى وَالثَّانِيَة
Historical & Scholarly Account
During the Hajj pilgrimage, the Prophet ﷺ met six seekers from the Khazraj tribe of Yathrib. Recognizing his signs, they embraced Islam. The following year (First Aqabah), 12 men gave allegiance on foundational moral values (no shirk, theft, fornication, or slander). The Prophet ﷺ sent young Mus'ab ibn Umayr with them as the first ambassador and teacher of Islam. Through Mus'ab's gentle wisdom, nearly every household in Yathrib entered Islam. The next year (Second Aqabah), 73 men and 2 women pledged full political protection and solidarity, opening the gates of Yathrib as the permanent sanctuary for the Ummah.
