The Battle of Uhud & The Test of Obedience
غَزْوَةُ أُحُدٍ وَدَرْسُ الطَّاعَة
Historical & Scholarly Account
Seeking revenge for Badr, Quraysh mobilized 3,000 warriors led by Abu Sufyan. The Prophet ﷺ marched to Mount Uhud with 700 men and stationed 50 archers on Mount Aynayn (Jabal al-Rumat) under Abdullah ibn Jubayr, commanding them strictly: 'Protect our backs! Do not leave your post under any circumstance, whether you see us winning or being devoured by birds!' Initial Muslim victory caused most archers to abandon their post for war booty. Khalid ibn al-Walid (then commanding Quraysh cavalry) exploited the gap, surrounding the Muslims. 70 Sahabah were martyred, including the Prophet's beloved uncle Hamzah (Sayyid al-Shuhada). The Prophet ﷺ was injured, his helmet shattered, and his tooth broken, yet he prayed: 'O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know.'
