The Battle of the Trench (Ghazwat al-Khandaq / Al-Ahzab)
غَزْوَةُ الخَنْدَقِ (الأَحْزَاب)
Historical & Scholarly Account
A grand confederacy of 10,000 warriors from Quraysh, Ghatafan, and desert tribes marched to eradicate the Muslims completely. Salman al-Farsi رضي الله عنه suggested an unprecedented Persian defense: digging a massive trench across the exposed northern entry of Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ dug alongside his companions through freezing cold, tying rocks to his stomach from hunger. While striking a stubborn rock, sparks flew, and the Prophet ﷺ prophesied the future conquest of the Persian, Roman, and Yemeni empires. After a month-long psychological siege and betrayal from Banu Qurayzah, Allah sent a ferocious icy wind and unseen angelic armies that threw the confederate camps into chaos, forcing them to retreat in total failure.
“O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came against you and We sent upon them a wind and armies you did not see...”
Surah Al-Ahzab (33:9) — The miraculous dispersal of the confederate army in the Battle of the Trench.
