The Battle of Hunayn & The Lesson of Humility
غَزْوَةُ حُنَيْنٍ وَحِكْمَةُ التَّوَاضُع
Historical & Scholarly Account
Shortly after Makkah, the confederation of Hawazin and Thaqif (20,000 men) laid an ambush in the narrow passes of Hunayn. The Muslim army was 12,000 strong. Some whispered with pride: 'We will not be defeated today due to small numbers!' The sudden shower of arrows caused mass confusion. As warriors scattered, the Prophet ﷺ remained steadfast on his white mule, riding straight into danger and proclaiming loudly: 'I am the Prophet, without a lie! I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib!' Abbas called out to the companions of the Tree and the Ansar, who rushed back. Total victory was achieved. When distributing spoils to reconcile new Makkan hearts, the Ansar received no worldly goods. The Prophet ﷺ gathered them and wept, saying: 'Are you not pleased, O Ansar, that the people return home with sheep and camels, while you return home with the Messenger of Allah in your midst?' The Ansar wept until their beards were soaked.
