The Public Proclamation on Mount Safa
الجَهْرُ بِالدَّعْوَةِ عَلَى جَبَلِ الصَّفَا
Historical & Scholarly Account
When Allah revealed: 'And warn your closest relatives' (26:214) and 'Proclaim openly what you are commanded' (15:94), Rasulullah ﷺ ascended Mount Safa and called out: 'Ya Sabahah!' (the customary alarm for approaching danger). The clans of Quraysh gathered. He addressed them: 'If I were to tell you that an army is waiting behind this valley to attack you, would you believe me?' They replied unanimously: 'Yes! We have never found you to tell a lie.' He declared: 'Then I am a warner to you of a severe punishment!' His uncle Abu Lahab shouted: 'May you perish! Is it for this you gathered us?' Upon which Allah revealed Surah Al-Masad.
