The Migration to Abyssinia (Al-Habashah)

الهِجْرَةُ إِلَى الحَبَشَة

The flight for religious freedom to the righteous Christian King Al-Najashi (Negus) and Ja'far ibn Abi Talib's eloquent speech.

Historical & Scholarly Account

To protect his followers from relentless torture, the Prophet ﷺ advised them: 'Go to the land of Abyssinia, for in it is a King (Al-Najashi) under whom no one is wronged.' The first group of 12 men and 4 women (including Uthman ibn Affan and the Prophet's daughter Ruqayyah) crossed the Red Sea, followed by a second group of 83 men led by Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. When Quraysh sent delegates with bribes to extradite them, Ja'far delivered a magnificent speech reciting Surah Maryam. Al-Najashi wept until his beard was wet, declaring: 'Verily, this message and what Jesus brought come from the very same source of light.'

Transformative Lessons for the Modern Believer

Seeking asylum for religious liberty and human dignity is an established prophetic Sunnah.
Ja'far's diplomatic eloquence built bridge of shared Abrahamic values with Christian leadership.
Justice transcends religious boundaries — a just non-Muslim ruler was preferred over an unjust kin.
