Gentleness with Children & Family

مُعَامَلَتُهُ لِلأَهْلِ وَالأَطْفَال ﷺ

Carrying his grandchildren on his back during prayer, playing with children in the streets, and being the best to his wives.

Classical Shama'il Narration

The Prophet ﷺ set the immortal golden rule: 'The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best among you to my wives.' When his daughter Sayyidah Fatimah entered, he would stand up, take her hand, kiss her forehead, and seat her in his own place. Anas ibn Malik, who served the Prophet ﷺ for ten full years from age ten, testified: 'By Allah, he never once said 'Uff' (a word of irritation) to me, nor did he ever say about anything I did: 'Why did you do that?' or about anything I left: 'Why did you not do that?'' When praying, if his grandson Umamah or Hasan climbed upon his back, he would lengthen his prostration so as not to disturb the child's joy.

Primary Hadith Citation (Jami' al-Tirmidhi (3895) & Sahih al-Bukhari (6038))

خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ، وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِي

The best of you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.

Spiritual Reflection for the Believer

The truest gauge of a person's faith and character is not how they behave in public, but their patience, sweetness, and generosity within the privacy of their home.
