Sublime Humility (Tawadu')
تَوَاضُعُهُ الشَّرِيفُ وَعُبُودِيَّتُهُ ﷺ
Classical Shama'il Narration
Despite being the Master of Humanity (Sayyid Walad Adam), the Prophet ﷺ embodied unmatched humility. When a stranger approached him trembling with fear, he comforted him gently: 'Be calm! For I am not a king; I am only the son of a woman from Quraysh who ate dried meat (Qadid).' Sayyidah Aisha was asked: 'What did the Prophet ﷺ do inside his home?' She replied: 'He was in the service of his family (sewing his clothes, mending his sandals, milking his goat), and when the time for prayer came, he went out to pray.' He sat among his companions without any elevated throne; strangers entering the mosque would have to ask: 'Which of you is Muhammad?'
إِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدٌ آكُلُ كَمَا يَأْكُلُ العَبْدُ وَأَجْلِسُ كَمَا يَجْلِسُ العَبْد
“I am only a servant: I eat as a servant eats, and I sit as a servant sits.”
True greatness in the sight of Allah is found in profound humility and self-forgetfulness in service of humanity.
