The Passing of the Beloved Messenger ﷺ
انْتِقَالُ الحَبِيبِ ﷺ إِلَى الرَّفِيقِ الأَعْلَى
Historical & Scholarly Account
On the morning of Monday, 12 Rabi al-Awwal 11 AH, the Prophet ﷺ lifted the curtain of Aisha's room and looked upon the Sahabah praying Fajr behind Abu Bakr. His face was radiant like a page of the Quran, and he smiled with pure joy seeing his community united in worship. Later that morning, resting on the lap of Sayyidah Aisha, he cleaned his teeth with a fresh Siwak. Dipping his hand in water, he said: 'La ilaha illa Allah, truly death has its agonies.' He raised his blessed finger toward the heavens, his final words being: **'Bal Al-Rafiq Al-A'la... Bal Al-Rafiq Al-A'la'** (Rather, the Highest Companion... the Highest Companion in Paradise). His hand gently lowered, and the purest soul returned to its Creator. Madinah was plunged into unimaginable grief. Abu Bakr arrived, kissed the Prophet's forehead weeping, and delivered his immortal words: 'Whosoever worshipped Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad has passed away. But whosoever worships Allah, let him know that Allah is Ever-Living and never dies!'
“Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed away before him. If he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?”
Surah Al Imran (3:144) — Recited by Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq to steady the grief-stricken companions upon the Prophet's passing.
